This is a true story.

The events depicted in this play took place in Faversham in 1551.

At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed.

Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Shakespeare wrote this?”

It’s the question I’ve gotten most throughout our rehearsal process - and was indeed on my own mind when the play was first pitched to me by Porters AD Will Block for the 2026 Hollywood Fringe.

Digging deeper, doing my directorial diligence, I found ARDEN OF FAVERSHAM frequently described as a domestic tragedy - though what struck me most was the play’s dark humor. Beneath the violence and betrayal is a frequently absurd series of failed schemes, botched murders, and catastrophically bad decisions made with unfailing confidence. The play understands something deeply uncomfortable: human desperation is often ridiculous.

The characters of ARDEN are driven by lust, ambition, greed, and frustration, but they are also constantly improvising, panicking, and scrambling to control situations spinning beyond them. Alice Arden is far more than a one-dimensional antihero: she is sharp, relentless, and trapped in a world offering few options outside of destruction.

What makes the play feel surprisingly modern is its tonal instability. One moment of the text is genuinely frightening; the next painfully funny. The result is a world where morality has become slippery, and where ordinary people convince themselves that they are capable of extraordinary crimes.

Four hundred years later, ARDEN OF FAVERSHAM remains consistently entertaining in part because it refuses to separate comedy from cruelty. It asks us to laugh - and to immediately consider why we were laughing in the first place.

I hope you enjoy this weird and wonderful ride as much as I have.
